  • The Principles of Creation

    by Tejas Hiremani

    Rating: 7.75

Plot/Idea: Hiremani contemplates the mysterious side of existence, and how we are all connected as humans and to other life forms, in this philosophical rendering. The ideas presented here are not mainstream, but they will provoke deep thought in readers when considering Hiremani's seven life principles. As the book progresses, his writing and ideas become increasingly abstract.

Prose: Hiremani’s writing is metaphorical and sophisticated. His fluid words will captivate readers, and, despite the complexity of his ideas, he is able to communicate them with ease.

Originality: Clearly Hiremani enjoys profound considerations, and he successfully relays his unconventional ideas and concepts in surprisingly relatable ways.

Character/Execution: The Principles of Creation dives right into Hiremani's core principles, with little fanfare. For readers who are familiar with the concepts presented here, that will not be an issue, but those new to the topics might prefer a more extensive build up. Hiremani is fearless in his honest approach, and his ideas will lead to deep discussions, particularly among philosophers.

  • Plot/Idea: Tripping Into Love recounts Alter’s life, with a heavy focus on his past drug use and how it reshaped his spirituality. His intriguing perspective recounts discovering Jesus through his addiction, and Alter shares eye-opening miracles he witnessed alongside his candid and enlightening trials of faith.

Prose: Tripping Into Love reveals Alter's history chronologically, as readers learn the roots to his spiritual epiphany and how he grew into sharing his faith with others. The writing, though sidetracked at times, moves at a snappy pace, and Alter recounts moments rich with both gentle beauty and suspense.

Originality: Alter's story of redemption is inspirational, and Christian readers will glean deep, thought-provoking insight through his experiences.

Character/Execution: Alter passionately shares his abiding Christian faith, sharing an uplifting testimony for readers that will affirm them while giving them hope.

  • Plot/Idea: Old Bones is an entertaining tale/travel journal chronicling the author's 15-day cycling trip around Lake Michigan. It features detailed, day-by-day descriptions full of humor, heart, and hardships--but most importantly, a love of cycling, the outdoors, and a thirst for adventure.

Prose: McShea's prose is engaging and full of heart; while his daily descriptions of his journey are as exhilarating as they are entertaining. Additionally, McShea adds historical background and context to the places he goes and the people he sees that are touched with wonder and respect for the natural beauty he encounters. However, "Old Bones" is, at its heart, a beautifully written ode to Lake Michigan, the UP, and all the people and places that make the area so special.

Originality: While travelogues are ubiquitous in both print and online blogging/social media, etc. what sets certain tales apart is when an author's perspective is not solely for entertainment, but reflects a genuine love and respect for the people and places they encounter. And McShea does evoke these feelings beautifully, while also balancing a sense of adventure and joy.

Character/Execution: The main character in "Old Bones" is undoubtedly McShea's natural surroundings and he does a wonderful job of capturing both the distinctive beauty and the sometimes grim reality of his journey. Additionally, his first-person narrative is focused as well as entertaining, while the people he meets are more than just placeholders, they are (overall) enigmatic, kind, and most importantly, real.
